We all know by now, there won’t be UMS drive option on the PSP Go. A much appreciated fact for those that didn’t want to carry their bag of games around, but for many of us UMD drive meant that you could just pass on games among friends without having to pay for each a copy, a fact Sony has accepted.
So while we don’t want our software locked down to a single console Sony european spokesman assured us: ” to work out the usage rights…. that’s a development that we’ll have to talk to as we get closer to launch. We have a plan in place, we just haven’t made that public ” .. a plan huh ?!
Will this plan involve some wifi shared license or transferable software across machine with limited usage? it’s all still in the dark it seems, and I can’t help but feel that : “We need to come out publicly with the plan on that as we get closer to the launch” just means they haven’t figured it out yet.
We all remember how the first launch of the PSP was plagued with piracy issues, with some even claiming they were running linux on their console, besides the pirated games and software. PSP3000 was alot more robust, sony affirmed: “You won’t be able to rip your games and play them on the system, the firmware precludes that, there’s no external battery, so there’s a number of protections put into place on the system”. But let’s not kid ourselves, if there is a will there is a way. Sony just needs to realise that at $250 bucks some “enthusiat gamers” might want more out of their piece than running Gran Turismo or checking the time. Truely some cool stuff came out of that :
